It must be terribly disappointing for André Aciman to see his novel CALL ME BY YOUR NAME so thoroughly ruined by Luca Guadagnino"s horrible direction, and by the totally dreadful failed casting of Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet in the lead roles of Elio and Oliver. How could everyone on this film fail to notice that these two straight actors have absolutely no interest in each other whatever? And that, except when they are (mercifully) saying goodbye to each other forever, they"re not even able to PRETEND they like each other? I haven"t seen casting this awful since Streisand & Matthau!
In case you haven"t already seen this dog turd, here"s the gist: For one solid hour we are bored stiff by watching a bunch of unpleasant and irrelevant people doing pretty much nothing at all in a dreary and run down little country place "Somewhere in Northern Italy" as the titles tell us. (Barf.) Thirty-year old Oliver (hideously miscast Archer) is stuck here for six weeks to do. something. We never find out what. Elio, played with alternating whining and petulant pouts by twenty-three year old Timothée Chalamet, is supposed to be seventeen, and does nothing but play the piano quite poorly, pout, and whine.
When Oliver shows up, the script says Elio is interested, but Chalamet is completely incapable of displaying interest or attraction or lust or any emotion other than petulant boredom. So, for an hour, the two men antagonize each other while spending a lot of time together.
Then, hideously and for NO reason, these two straight men start having sex with each other, and the film goes from boring to horror. Far from chemistry, these two men have physics: that is, magnetic REPULSION. You can actually see their bodies thrashing and twisting, trying not to touch each other. Director Guadagnino keeps the camera on them until Hammer grimly removes his pants, and then wisely pans away from the men and focuses on a tree in the garden outside the window. It"s the last act of mercy in the film.
Special blame must go to Worst Cinematographer nominee Sayombhu Mukdeeprom, who manages to make even rural Italy look like the inside of a porta-potty. I mean seriously: how can you mess up a sun-sparkling-on-the-water shot? Mukdeeprom knows how! You focus on the detritus floating on the surface, so it looks like a sewer. Total vomit.

After seeing it I went through days of processing old, deep-set emotions I pushed away at the time to not feel so much pain. It gave me a gift of cathartic processing. Ive fallen in love with both of them and Im so grateful for this film. My heart feels different, the quivering of innocent love alive again. ??.

Am I the only one who felt a strange vibe with the interviewer? It felt like he was only interested in Armie. And when he asks Timothee questions, theyre dumb. Even Armie noticed it “oh I thought it was both of us” when the interviewer showed him the pictures. Idk thats just me. They still cute. Ok I know they"re both straight but honestly wanna find someone who looks at me like Armie looks at Timothée @ 12:41.

This is actually my life with my friend Hans (we spent 30 years together) concentrated into 6 weeks in Italy. Met him 1984, he looked like Oliver with his hairy chest, and I was Elio, but just 2 years younger, exactly, we were both born the 21st of July. Had a wonderful life together until Hans passed away the other year – and left me alone in chaos – as Oliver did to young Elio. This is the most perfect film I ever seen, the love between them is amazing – like the 30 years we got – but just a couple of weeks for them… Jan Hermansson, Sweden.

This is a war movie that may be as good as Apocalyse Now though the focus is far narrower. The instrumental version of mystery of love aaaah ??????. The juxtaposition is quite something here. In the previous scene, the peach scene, Elio breaks down and cries in Oliver"s arms and is the very epitome of heartbreak. And then immediately afterwards, there"s this scene of complete pure comfortability and love. Call me by your name final scene. You know I"m not going anywhere. 6:57 Has to be the most chilling in the movie. Call me by your name is a true wonder transports us a message about the first love in the most natural way. Call me by your name sequel. Dude I"m so in love with this one person and I want to have this kind of love with them.??.
